Collection: Hand-Knotted And Soumak

As you can well imagine, experienced and talented rug makers don’t always incorporate a single style into their overall design. Artists very much enjoy creative freedom and it does help to break up what some may consider hours and hours of monotony. One popular combination is joining the hand-knot and Soumak weave together. Both techniques result in beautiful rugs on their own merits, but when combined, the end result can be very striking.

Combining the Hand-Knotted and Soumak Weaves

The Soumak weave, in its basic form results in a flat-weave, but hand-knotted rugs can have a rather high pile. Joining these two techniques can create interesting depth and texture to a rug that cannot be achieved by as a stand-alone design. Similarly, the Soumak weave can be used in varying fashion to create striking patterns, but by adding the versatility of hand-knots to the overall weave can highlight borders and shading areas to create focal points within the rug.

Both techniques, on their own, do produce a very durable rug, but adding hand-knots to a Soumak weave make that construction method even stronger and thus increasingly more durable.
