Hand-Loomed Rugs
In essence, a loomed rug starts with a foundation called a warp. The warp consists of single strands of fiber yarn running parallel to each other, often with a top and a bottom layer. The weft is typically colorful yearn that creates the beautiful patterns seen on a finished rug. These individual strands of yarn are passed between the upper and lower warp, pressed tightly to the row before it, and then a lever is maneuvered that swaps the upper and lower wefts securing the yarn in place.
This process creates a flat rug known as a flat-weave. To add thickness to a rug, known as the pile, different techniques are used to add depth to the weft.
