Hand-Woven Rugs

Hand-made rugs are beautiful works of functional art. The processes by which different types of rugs are made can have an effect on how and where they are better suited. Both hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs are painstakingly crafted by skilled artisans, but there is definitely a noticeable difference. The hand-knotted rug is often remarkably more detailed, but the beauty is only displayed on one side. The hand-woven rug, produced on special looms, creates a beautiful pattern on both sides of the rug. This is because the individual lines of color pass in and out of the base thread and is thus visible on front and back. The fiber used on hand-woven rugs is typically shorter than hand knotted rugs and the threads are held tightly together through the weaving rather than by thousands of individual knots. This is not to say that woven rugs are inferior, but they can be somewhat less durable over time. Even so, a well-crafted hand-woven rug is surely an artistic treasure.
