What is a Kilim Rug? History, Patterns & How to Style One

Colorful Geometric Kilim Rug in Tribal Room Setting - Classic World Oriental Rugs Santa Fe

Kilim rugs are among the most fascinating and versatile floor coverings in the world of handmade textiles. With their bold geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and rich cultural heritage, Kilims have been treasured for centuries across Turkey, Persia, Afghanistan, and the tribal regions of Central Asia. At Classic World Oriental Rugs, we carry a curated selection of authentic Kilim rugs in our Santa Fe and Albuquerque showrooms.

What is a Kilim?

A Kilim (also spelled Kelim or Gelim) is a flat-woven rug with no pile. Unlike hand-knotted Persian or Oriental rugs, Kilims are made using a tapestry weaving technique where the weft threads are tightly interlocked to create the pattern. This results in a thin, lightweight, and reversible rug with a smooth, flat surface on both sides.

Because they have no pile, Kilims are:

  • Lightweight and easy to move
  • Reversible โ€” both sides look beautiful
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Perfect for high-traffic areas
  • Ideal for layering over other rugs

The History of Kilim Weaving

Kilim weaving is one of the oldest textile traditions in the world, dating back thousands of years. Nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes across Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and the Caucasus wove Kilims for practical purposes โ€” as floor coverings, wall hangings, prayer mats, saddle bags, and even tent dividers.

Each tribe developed its own distinctive patterns, colors, and symbols passed down through generations. These designs were not merely decorative โ€” they carried deep cultural meaning, representing protection, fertility, good fortune, and tribal identity.

Kilim Patterns & Symbols

The geometric patterns found in Kilims are rich with symbolism. Common motifs include:

  • Diamond shapes โ€” protection and warding off evil
  • Hooks and rams' horns โ€” strength and power
  • Stars โ€” happiness and good luck
  • Running water patterns โ€” life and fertility
  • Tree of life โ€” connection between earth and heaven
  • Bold color blocks โ€” tribal identity and regional origin

How to Style a Kilim in Your Home

One of the greatest strengths of a Kilim rug is its versatility. Here are some popular ways to use one:

  • Living room centerpiece โ€” layer a Kilim over a larger neutral rug for a bohemian, tribal look
  • Entryway or hallway runner โ€” Kilim runners add color and character to narrow spaces
  • Wall hanging โ€” mount a Kilim on the wall as a stunning piece of textile art
  • Bedroom accent โ€” place at the foot of the bed for a pop of color and warmth
  • Outdoor spaces โ€” durable Kilims work well on covered patios and porches

Kilims pair beautifully with Santa Fe and Southwestern-style interiors, as well as modern, bohemian, and eclectic home designs.

Caring for Your Kilim Rug

Kilims are relatively easy to care for compared to pile rugs:

  • Vacuum regularly on both sides without a beater bar
  • Rotate periodically to ensure even wear
  • Spot clean spills immediately with a damp cloth
  • Have professionally cleaned every 2-3 years
  • Always use a quality rug pad underneath to prevent slipping and protect the fibers
